The lagoon

I walk on top of the wet grass amidst trees ancient beyond measure, by the smell it had recently rained, and I arrive at a large lagoon. Near that lagoon, a small wooden house stands with smoke rising from its chimney, the full moon shines bright and is reflected on the still waters. I know this place… I’m dreaming again, why do I keep coming back here in my dreams?

It’s not a dream a voice echoes in my head.

‘Who’s there?’ I ask ‘Am I not asleep?’

You are asleep yes, yet this is not a dream. See it more as a memory. Look, here she comes.

A woman with a simple white dress comes out from inside the hut, her white hair shines with the light from the full moon looking like flowing silver in the breeze. The woman looks at me and smiles.

‘Who is she?’ I ask the voice in my head.

Don’t you recognize her? Don’t tell me you forgot… You can’t have forgotten because we promised we wouldn’t.

‘We? What do you mean?’

Selene… Her name is Selene, surely you must remember.

‘I’m not sure… She’s beautiful and my chest aches with pain and happiness at the same time.’

She’s your wife… Our wife. And what a gift she is from the Gods themselves. Ours and at the same time she belongs to no one. She’s the root of all our happiness and our sadness. Heads-up, she's coming closer.

The woman had crossed all the path towards me and she just stood there for a moment, staring into my eyes. Then she hugs me and it feels like I am home at last after being away for so long.

‘I’ll be here… I’ll always be here my love. Waiting for you for as long as it takes.’ I whisper in her ear without even intending to speak.

She stares longingly into my eyes, happiness and deep sadness shine in her eyes at the same time.

‘I know Sepheron… and that’s what brings me the most joy and the most pain. For I won’t always be here, sometimes I’ll be somewhere else very far away for long periods of time. Sometimes our paths shall not cross at all or worse divide midway. Maybe it would have been better if you just forgot and we parted ways for eternity so you can live.’

‘Live? There’s no life away from you. So I shall be here, waiting. Always.’

‘If that is your choice… I just hope you never come to regret it, my love. For I never want to see you hurt and most of all I don’t want to be the reason for that pain.’ Tears stream down her face, I clean them up and tenderly kiss her lips.

An annoying beeping starts echoing all around and the place starts fading into darkness suddenly. I wake up, tears stream down my face as I turn off the alarm on my cellphone.
